Australian Portable Camps was founded in 2001 by Frank Martino. Frank is a very well-known chef and entrepreneur that started working in Tennant Creek mining and construction camps in 1968. He branched out into catering projects all over Australia, a major contract being the Ranger Uranium mine construction village contract where he looked after well over 1,500 single people and 700 married people in the caravan park and housing estate.
After years of working in different remote areas on large and small projects, his biggest frustration was the limitations of infrastructure and facilities provided to service the personnel on site. Frank saw this as an opportunity and set about developing a more efficient model and system.
Frank then left the Northern Territory and founded Australian Portable Camps, basing the business on innovation and moving beyond the status quo, before looking for new opportunities by breaking ground in new products, processes and materials. The business grew very quickly on the belief that modular construction should be strong and robust, user-friendly, and maintenance free to provide the best level of comfort and degree of safety possible to camp residents.
The insight gained over years of practical hands-on experience as a chef in inefficiently designed work spaces is reflected in the new ergonomic kitchen designs that focus on the needs oft he end-user. This philosophy is extended across all facets of the mining camp, including accommodation suites, offices, kitchens, laundries, wet-messes and other buildings that are designed in a modularised package to maximise space and use it efficiently while achieving the utmost in comfort and productivity.
